A Clinical Observation on Rectal Cancer

Abstract
A clinical records of patients who were treated upon rectal carcinoma [during last 4+ years up to Tune 1974, have been analyzed and the-results were summarized as follows:
1. The ¢¥highest incidence of disease was in 3rd decade of (28.8%) and the average age was 48 years. The sex distribution was 64.7% in- male and 35.3% in female with ratio of 1.3:1,slight male preponderance was observed.
2. The duration of the disease within a year was 74.4%.
3. The main clinical symptoms were as following orders; rectal bleeding (51.5%), change of bowel habit (42.6%), painful defecation (36.8%) and tenesmus (19.1%).
4. Diagnosis was made by digital examination and sigmoidoscopy in all cases and the barium enema was done to rule out multiple origin.
5. The location of the tumors were as following orders; within 6 cm. from the anal verge 38 patients (66.2%), within 12cm, from the anal verge 15 patients (22. 1%) and over 13cm. from the anal verge 8 patients (11.7%).
6. Histologically, adenocarcinoma consisted of 64 cases (94.1%), squamous cell carcinoma 3 cass (4.4%) and leiomyosarcoma 1 case.
7. The most commonly performed operative procedure was abdominoperineal resection (74.5%), pull through operation 11.8% and low anterior resection 7.8% respectively.
8. The postoperative complications occurred in 15 patients, of which wound infection 7 cases (13.7%) were the most common.
